On 28th December, 2018 we celebrated not just our 2018 victories which included County Cup and East Mayo Centenary Cup victories but also celebrated the Golden Jubilee of the 1968 Junior and Minor wins and the 10 year anniversary of the 2008 Senior Championship and U21 wins.
It was a wonderful night with many returning to Ballaghaderreen to reminisce with old team mates and while we were missing a few faces from the line up each was remembered and many were represented by family members. Jim Fleming and Philip Moynihan spoke of each team from 1968, as captains, and told of the struggles and sacrifices made in 1968 to field a team and travel to games. Team manager from 1968, Fr. John Doherty was also in attendance. Andy Moran and Gary Conway gave speeches which left no doubt in anyone's mind that anything is possible and it was easy to agree looking at the legends within the room itself - speaking of legends, a special tribute was paid to Frank Kelly who played such an important part in the 2008 victory. Paul McHugh entertained us all with his introductions to the 2018 teams, no man was spared!! A small presentation was made to Kathleen McHugh who went over and beyond during the year ensuring our young men were fed and looked after before taking to the pitch. Thanks to Durkin's for the facilities and the food and to Dermot who is always willing to act as MC and DJ on such occasions. And lastly a huge thank you to Christy McCann who was central in organising the night and who gave a rousing rendition of the victory song from 1968 "Champions of Mayo" which was written by Oliver Burke and was originally sung by John McHugh.
